The Asia-Pacific (APAC) automotive industry is undergoing a significant transformation, with infrared-reflecting (IRR) glazing technology emerging as a key driver of innovation. According to GlobalData’s latest report, “Global Sector Overview & Forecast: Automotive Glazing Q1 2025”, the APAC IRR glazing market is projected to grow from 65.1 million units in 2024 to 68.6 million units by 2029, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.0%.

As automakers across the region increasingly adopt larger glass surfaces and panoramic roofs, IRR glazing is being integrated to enhance passenger comfort, cabin temperature control, and vehicle energy efficiency.

“The introduction of IRR glazing has revolutionized the way vehicles manage heat load, particularly in regions with high solar exposure,” said Madhuchhanda Palit, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData.

“In the APAC market, where temperatures can soar, the ability of IRR glazing to reject up to 60% of solar energy translates into a marked reduction in cabin temperatures. As automakers in the APAC region increasingly prioritize sustainability and efficiency, the integration of IRR glazing is poised to become a standard feature in new vehicle models.”

The development of IRR glazing has been significantly advanced by magnetron sputtering—a coating process that enables the application of high-performance multilayer coatings at scale. These coatings meet stringent visible light transmittance standards, crucial for automotive applications. Industry leaders such as Guardian and Saint-Gobain are leading this charge with advanced product lines including Guardian SilverGuard IRR and Sun Ban, offering thermal performance enhancements and UV protection.

Manufacturers like BMW, Citroën, and Ford are already incorporating these glazing solutions to distinguish their vehicles in a competitive marketplace, highlighting IRR glazing’s potential in both functional and aesthetic vehicle design.

“Looking ahead, the future of the IRR glazing market in the APAC region appears promising,” Palit noted. “As vehicle designs continue to evolve, there is an increasing trend towards larger sunroofs and glass surfaces, necessitating innovative glazing solutions that address heat absorption and privacy concerns. The advancements in coating technologies, such as the magnetron sputtering process, are expected to enhance the production capabilities of IRR glazing, further driving market growth.”

The ongoing electrification of mobility in APAC is also expected to accelerate the adoption of IRR technology. As electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers seek to improve battery range and reduce interior cooling loads, IRR glazing offers a practical solution for energy conservation.

“In summary, the IRR glazing market is set to experience significant growth in the APAC region, driven by consumer demand for comfort, energy efficiency, and aesthetic appeal,” Palit concluded.

“The advancements in glazing technology and the competitive landscape will further fuel this expansion, positioning IRR glazing as a critical component in the evolving automotive sector. While the future holds considerable potential, it is essential for stakeholders to remain agile and responsive to market dynamics, ensuring that innovations continue to meet the diverse needs of consumers across the region.”

With APAC’s automotive sector rapidly adapting to emerging technologies, IRR glazing is poised to become a cornerstone of sustainable vehicle design in the years ahead.
