UltraTech Cement Limited has announced a significant step towards sustainable logistics with the scaling up of electric vehicle (EV) trucks for transporting materials and products across its operations. The company has signed a transport service contract to deploy 100 electric trucks for the movement of 75,000 metric tons (MT) of clinker per month from its Dhar Cement Works in Madhya Pradesh to its Dhule Cement Works in Maharashtra, a distance of approximately 400 kilometers per roundtrip.
UltraTech Cement becomes the first company in India’s cement industry to deploy electric trucks at this scale, replacing traditional fossil-fuel trucks. This initiative is expected to reduce transport emissions by 17,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, marking a significant contribution to the company’s sustainability goals.
The expansion follows the success of a pilot program launched in January 2024, which saw the introduction of five electric trucks for clinker transport along this route. The pilot also included the installation of charging infrastructure and comprehensive driver training. Building on this success, UltraTech is now evaluating additional routes for deploying more EV trucks in its logistics operations.
Mr. K C Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement, commented on the initiative, “UltraTech is fully committed to realizing its Net Zero goal by 2050. Our holistic approach to sustainability is reflected in the scaling up of electric trucks within our logistics operations, highlighting our commitment to sustainable practices in the industry.”
In line with the Government of India’s eFAST initiative, UltraTech aims to deploy 500 electric trucks by June 2025. The company has been a pioneer in the industry’s green logistics efforts, having introduced CNG vehicles in 2021, LNG vehicles in 2022, and now electric trucks in 2024. UltraTech currently operates over 468 CNG trucks and 67 LNG trucks across several of its manufacturing units.
