At Toyota Motor Corporation’s General Shareholders’ Meeting in Toyota City, Aichi, Chairman Akio Toyoda took a rare role as a respondent, with President Koji Sato chairing the session. This marked the first time since 2009 that Toyoda, who was appointed president at that year’s meeting, was not in the chairperson’s seat.
During the meeting, the 4,656 attendees posed questions ranging from certification issues to shareholder returns. The atmosphere lightened when Toyoda, despite his calm demeanor, mentioned how nerve-wracking it was to be called upon by the chairperson for the first time in 15 years.
Among the questions raised, one addressed the implementation and commercialization of autonomous driving in Woven City, a project Toyoda holds dear. The Woven City concept was unveiled at CES 2020, and Toyoda has shown strong personal and professional commitment to it.
In response to the shareholder’s question, President Sato invited Toyoda to speak, highlighting his foundational role in the project. Toyoda reminisced about the origin of Woven City, which began as an idea to transform the former Kanto Auto Works site into a futuristic test course.
Toyoda explained that the first phase of construction would be completed next year, emphasizing that Woven City is built on a rich history of passion and innovation. He expressed hope that the city would foster new forms of mobility and serve as a place for future generations to innovate and collaborate.
Toyoda also acknowledged the support of shareholders, noting that such future investments are made possible by their backing. He urged shareholders to continue their support and interest as Woven City evolves.
The meeting concluded with applause from the attendees, recognizing Toyoda’s vision and commitment to shaping the future of mobility through Woven City.
