Uttar Pradesh (UP) has solidified its position as a pioneer in electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India, achieving remarkable success in the realm of hybrid and electric vehicle sales throughout 2023. The state’s ascent to prominence in the EV sector is attributed to the strategic implementation of the UP Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy, unveiled in 2022. Recent data sourced from the Vahan Dashboard, as reported by WRI India, sheds light on the significant surge in EV numbers, particularly in the electric two and three-wheeler categories. The state made a considerable contribution to the national EV landscape, accounting for 18% of overall EV sales in India.
The year 2023 witnessed an astounding 70% surge in EV registrations in Uttar Pradesh compared to the preceding year. Notably, December alone saw a noteworthy milestone, with an impressive 11.7% of vehicles sold in the state being electric. This translates to one in every ten vehicles sold during that month being an electric vehicle.
The total tally of electric vehicles sold in Uttar Pradesh in 2023 reached an impressive 2,77,837 units. Breaking down the figures, the largest chunk comprised 2,32,601 units of E-3 wheelers, followed by 40,268 units of E-2 wheelers, 4,846 units of E-4 wheelers, and a modest 50 units of electric buses.
Delving into the specifics of the EV market share in Uttar Pradesh for 2023, E-Rickshaws dominated with an overwhelming 81.62%, followed by E-2 wheelers at 16.05%, E-4 wheelers at 1.93%, and Cargo 3-wheelers at 0.36%. Other electric vehicle categories collectively accounted for 0.04% of the market share.
Despite the substantial growth, EVs constituted only 8% of the total vehicle sales in Uttar Pradesh. However, the state’s contribution to the national EV landscape was substantial, registering an 18% share of total EV sales in India. This surge in EV adoption is indicative of a broader trend, with Uttar Pradesh experiencing a 70% increase in EV registrations in 2023 compared to the previous year, where total EV sales amounted to 1,62,864 units in 2022. December 2023 marked a historic moment for the state, witnessing the highest-ever monthly EV sales. This unprecedented achievement underscores Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to sustainable mobility and positions it as a frontrunner in the electric vehicle revolution sweeping across the nation. As the state continues to lead the charge, these remarkable figures may serve as a blueprint for other regions seeking to embrace and promote electric mobility.
