The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates selected Siemens technology to create a national network of fast electric vehicle (EV), chargers. This will reduce carbon emissions, increase adoption of EVs, address range anxiety and help lay the foundation for a more connected and sustainable transportation system.

Ten ultra-fast charging chargers Siemens Sicharge D 160kW will be installed along the roads in Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman. The chargers can scale up to 300 kW to meet changing market needs. They can also be extended with external dispensers that can hold up to two more charging cables. The chargers can be remotely managed and monitored via cloud connectivity.

Sharif Salim Al Olama is the Under-Secretary of Ministry of Energy and Industry. He stated that the UAE is working with confidence to reduce its national carbon footprint. This includes working on the demand-side and looking at future energies and technologies to lower our carbon footprint. “Electric vehicles are essential to this effort. Providing this convenient, fast and efficient EV corridor is a critical step in the energy transformation” Sharif Salim Al Olama added.

Siemens will supply the infrastructure equipment, control, and monitoring software for charging, as well training and support for commissioning the network. The command-and control system allows for full monitoring and control over all units. It also provides the basis for the next phase, which will be to create an app that drivers can use to book and access chargers.

Birgit Dargel (Vice President Sales eMobility, Siemens Smart Infrastructure) said that she is proud to be supporting the sustainability program in United Arab Emirates through our EV charging solution. This project in the UAE builds on the success of Sicharge D, a public fast charger that has a peak efficiency of 96 per cent. It is also one of the most efficient high power DC chargers available. The charger’s ability to communicate with the cloud gives operators real-time information as well as flexibility for managing their charging network. The touch screen display is intuitive and height-adjustable at 24 inches. Its elegant appearance ensures a great user experience.

In October 2021, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Siemens agreed to a memorandum of agreement. This will establish a long-term partnership that will help meet the ministry’s sustainability and digitalization goals. The discussions also include transportation. Smart building technologies, industrial energy management, and intelligent substations at the grid edge are all part of the discussion. The MOU framework will first deliver the national EV Charging Corridor.
