In a landmark step toward accelerating electric mobility adoption, the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT), under the Government of Kerala and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), unveiled a series of innovative electric mobility initiatives during a high-profile launch event held at ANERT Headquarters, Thiruvananthapuram. The ceremony was presided over by Hon’ble Minister for Electricity, Sri. K. Krishnan Kutty.

Among the most significant announcements was India’s first successful Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology demonstration, a groundbreaking initiative in partnership with the India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) and supported technically by the University of Delaware. The project uses retrofitted Tata Nexon EVs (Tata Motors) to enable bidirectional energy flow between electric vehicles and the power grid, transforming EVs into mobile energy storage units that can help balance grid demand.

“Kerala is leading by example in the clean transportation revolution,” said Reji Kumar Pillai, President of ISGF. “This V2G initiative sets a national precedent for how EVs can play an active role in energy management.”

Further enhancing the e-mobility ecosystem, ANERT officially launched EZ4EV, Kerala’s first unified EV charging application. Developed entirely in-house, the app provides a seamless user experience with features like real-time charger availability, trip planning, tariff-based billing, and access to 18 public charging stations across the state—without third-party service charges.

To improve comfort at charging stations, Kerala also introduced its first dedicated EV customer lounge at the ANERT HQ. The facility is equipped with air conditioning, refreshments, news access, Wi-Fi, and washrooms, enhancing the convenience of EV users during charging downtime.

While the spotlight remained on electric mobility, the state also inaugurated Kerala’s first grid-interactive, solar-powered Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a 100kW/150kWh capacity. The system is designed to provide uninterrupted solar power, replace diesel gensets, and integrate intelligent energy management systems (EMS and BMS).

These projects were implemented under the guidance of Puneet Kumar IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Power Department, and K.R. Jyothilal IAS, ACS Finance, and align with Kerala’s long-term vision of developing a digitally integrated, green transportation and energy infrastructure.

With this launch, Kerala has positioned itself as a national leader in electric mobility innovation—delivering not just clean energy solutions but also consumer-centric infrastructure and digital tools for a seamless EV experience.
