Audi has unveiled a significant technology upgrade for its A3 Sportback TFSI e plug-in hybrid, featuring a higher battery capacity, faster DC charging capabilities, and an extended electric range of up to 143 kilometers. The upgrades promise greater efficiency, increased power, and improved driving dynamics, offering a blend of comfort and performance.

Enhanced Powertrain with Turbocharged Engine and Optimized Electric Motor
At the core of the enhanced A3 Sportback TFSI e lies a new turbocharged 1.5 TFSI evo2 engine, replacing the previous 1.4 TFSI unit. This new engine integrates advanced features like variable turbine geometry, plasma-coated cylinder liners, and a higher compression ratio of 11.5:1, resulting in improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Alongside the optimized electric motor, which now delivers 85 kW and 330 Nm of torque, the hybrid system provides a seamless driving experience.

The A3 Sportback is available in two performance variants: the 40 TFSI e2 and the more powerful 45 TFSI e1. The latter achieves a system output of 200 kW (272 PS) and 400 Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.3 seconds. The 40 TFSI e2, on the other hand, offers a combined power of 150 kW (204 PS) and completes the same sprint in 7.4 seconds.

Doubling the Battery Capacity and Introducing DC Fast Charging
Audi has nearly doubled the battery capacity of the A3 Sportback TFSI e, equipping it with a 25.7 kWh high-voltage battery (net capacity: 19.7 kWh). This upgrade, achieved with improved cell chemistry and a more efficient packaging of the battery modules, enables the vehicle to travel up to 143 kilometers on electric power alone, according to the WLTP cycle. The battery is kept at optimal temperatures via a dedicated cooling circuit.

For the first time, the A3 Sportback TFSI e supports DC fast charging at speeds of up to 50 kW. This new feature allows drivers to recharge the battery from 10% to 80% in less than half an hour, making long-distance travel more convenient. Additionally, three-phase AC charging at up to 11 kW is also supported, reducing the charging time to just 2.5 hours.

Enhanced Driving Dynamics with Intelligent Drive Management
Audi’s intelligent drive management system ensures that the hybrid operates efficiently in various driving conditions. Drivers can prioritize electric-only driving using the EV mode, while the “Auto Hybrid” mode manages the balance between the electric motor and the TFSI engine. The system also includes advanced recuperation capabilities, allowing energy recovery during coasting and braking.

In “Dynamic” mode or during kickdown acceleration, the hybrid system unleashes maximum power, making the most of the enhanced electric boost. The A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e1 delivers 70 kW of boost power, while the 40 TFSI e2 offers 40 kW under optimal conditions.

Sportier Design and Pricing Details
With its upgraded powertrain, Audi has also refined the A3 Sportback TFSI e’s aesthetics, offering sportier styling elements. The A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e1 comes standard with the S line exterior package, featuring an S-specific radiator grille, black styling accents, and red brake calipers. Both models include 17-inch alloy wheels, Audi’s drive select system, and an enhanced Audi virtual cockpit.

The A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e2 is priced from 44,200 euros, while the more powerful 45 TFSI e1 starts at 47,700 euros. Audi is now accepting orders, with the A3 allstreet plug-in hybrid version expected to launch later this fall.

The new Audi A3 Sportback TFSI e represents a leap forward in hybrid technology, offering improved range, faster charging, and a more powerful drive system, making it a compelling option for those seeking a dynamic yet efficient driving experience.
