In a landmark moment for Ford Motor Company, the all-electric Ford Explorer has rolled off the production line at the newly inaugurated Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Center. This state-of-the-art facility, established with a $2 billion investment, represents a significant stride in Ford’s commitment to electric mobility and sustainable production.

The Cologne plant, historically significant since its founding in 1930, has been transformed into a cutting-edge hub for electric vehicle (EV) production. The launch of the all-electric Explorer, designed with a blend of German engineering and American attitude, marks the beginning of a new era for Ford in Europe. This vehicle boasts a superior standard specification, including battery electric powertrains that provide a driving range of over 600 km on a single charge.

Kieran Cahill, vice president of Manufacturing for Ford in Europe and International Markets Group, expressed his enthusiasm: “To see the Cologne factory being transformed into a state-of-the-art electric vehicle production facility is nothing short of amazing. The start of mass production of electric vehicles, with the new all-electric Explorer, marks the beginning of a new era for Ford in Europe.”

Ford’s transformation of the Cologne plant into a “factory of the future” includes advanced AI integration and a sophisticated network of over 600 robots. These robots perform a variety of tasks, such as welding, cutting, dusting, painting, and fusing, ensuring precision and efficiency. The facility features a “digital twin” system that monitors and supports production line operators, maintaining high-quality standards. This digital control center oversees the entire assembly process in real time, ensuring every part and nut at each workstation meets the required specifications.

Rene Wolf, managing director of Manufacturing at Ford-Werke GmbH, highlighted the advancements: “By monitoring and controlling every step of the manufacturing process, Ford will achieve unprecedented levels of quality for our customers.”

The Cologne Electric Vehicle Center stands as one of Ford’s most efficient vehicle assembly plants globally, with significant reductions in emissions, water usage, and energy consumption. The facility operates entirely on certified renewable electricity and biomethane, aligning with Ford’s broader goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its European production footprint by 2035. The plant will continuously improve carbon efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with data monitored and recorded for independent certification.
