In a significant move towards advancing its major highway electrification goals, Nxu, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXU) has formally submitted its application for grant funding under the California Energy Commission’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program. The NEVI Formula Program, backed by the California Energy Commission, is set to allocate more than $40 million in grant funds to support strategic initiatives in the deployment of high-powered, direct-current fast charger electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Nxu, a prominent domestic technology company specializing in innovative EV charging and energy storage solutions, is seeking to leverage the available grant funds to develop, own, and operate seven crucial charging sites strategically positioned along California’s major highway corridors, including I-58, I-15, and I-40. The grant application outlines Nxu’s comprehensive plan, aiming to offset construction and equipment costs associated with the deployment of these new charging sites, potentially reducing up to one-fourth of the total project costs.

Mark Hanchett, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Nxu, expressed the company’s commitment to advancing the electrification of high-demand highway routes. “Nxu has long been working toward the electrification of high-demand highway routes to ensure EV drivers have a fast, reliable, consistent experience. We’ve demonstrated that commitment with the California NEVI corridor 7 sites we have under control. We’re proud to submit our official application to assist the California Energy Commission in their pursuit of charging infrastructure and look forward to growing our presence throughout the state.”

Nxu’s EV charging technology, known as NxuOne™ EV Charging Solutions, places a strong emphasis on the overall customer experience. Equipped with multiple patented systems, Nxu’s fast-charging capabilities exceed the 150kW requirement, and the optimized site layout prioritizes pull-through use cases for EVs of all sizes and capabilities. Notably, NxuOne™ EV Charging Solutions ensure a consistent, reliable charging experience by not splitting charging power across multiple chargers, providing all users with the same powerful experience, regardless of the number of vehicles charging simultaneously.

Furthermore, Nxu qualifies for the requirement that 25 percent of NEVI recipients must be qualified small businesses, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity in the electric vehicle charging landscape.

NxuOne™ EV Charging Solutions offer powerful, standard-agnostic charging, catering to the specific power needs of all EV users. With Nxu’s recent announcement of Quartzsite, Ariz., as its inaugural highway charging location and the unveiling of four California NEVI corridor 7 sites—Tehachapi, North Edwards, Barstow, and Kramer Junction—Nxu is actively targeting additional sites within the corridor to further expand its network and contribute to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in the region.
