The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) releases a new performance standard for batteries of electric vehicles to ensure the safety of its users according to a senior consumer official. BIS is a national body that sets standards and comes under the consumer affairs ministry.

The standard comes for electrically propelled road vehicles and test specifications for lithium-ion traction battery packs and systems. The new standards include a test process for the basic characteristic of electrical functionality, reliability, and performance for battery packs and systems.

The standard is based on real-life scenarios for electric vehicles including when the vehicle is parked and the battery is not in use for a long period of time, the battery system is being shipped or stored, using the battery at very high or low temperatures, etc.

Electric vehicles run on rechargeable batteries and electric motors. The use and demand for electric vehicles have grown in the market. Most EVs use lithium-ion batteries for a high-power weight ratio.
