Energy In Motion Limited (EIM) has entered into an agreement with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to establish and operate fast-charging and battery-swapping infrastructure for heavy commercial vehicles at selected HPCL retail outlets across India. The collaboration aims to accelerate the deployment of electric freight mobility infrastructure along major transport corridors.
Under the agreement, EIM will roll out charging and battery-swapping facilities in phases across HPCL’s nationwide retail network of more than 25,000 fuel stations. The initial deployment will focus on key freight corridors, including Mumbai–Pune, Delhi–Jaipur, and Chennai–Bangalore, over the next 18 to 24 months, with further expansion planned thereafter. The stations will support electric commercial vehicles and will be integrated with EIM’s digital platform for real-time station availability, remote monitoring, and digital payments.
The partnership leverages the complementary strengths of both companies. EIM will own and manage the battery inventory along with the charging and battery-swapping infrastructure, while HPCL will provide space, utilities, and common amenities at its retail outlets. According to the companies, this model is expected to enable faster deployment of charging infrastructure while improving accessibility for electric freight operators.
Battery swapping will be offered alongside conventional fast charging, allowing compatible heavy commercial vehicles to replace depleted batteries with fully charged units in approximately seven minutes. The companies said the approach is intended to reduce vehicle downtime and improve fleet utilisation for long-haul freight operations.
EIM said it is developing an integrated electric heavy commercial vehicle ecosystem that includes megawatt-scale charging and battery-swapping stations. The company launched its Ashwa 55-ton electric tractor-trailer in August 2025 and has already commissioned six heavy-duty battery swap stations in the Delhi-NCR region and the JNPA port area, with a combined daily capacity of 840 battery swaps. It aims to operate 40 heavy commercial vehicle swap-cum-charging stations by March 2027.
Commenting on the partnership, Narendra Murkumbi, Managing Director of Energy In Motion, said the collaboration with HPCL would enable the company to deploy reliable charging and battery-swapping infrastructure at locations already equipped with power connectivity, safety systems, and essential amenities, supporting the expansion of electric freight transport across India.
