Volvo Cars has announced the rollout of Google Gemini across its vehicle lineup, marking a major leap forward in how drivers interact with their cars through advanced artificial intelligence.

Developed in collaboration with Google, the new system replaces traditional voice command interfaces with a more intuitive, conversation-based assistant capable of understanding natural language, context, and user intent. The rollout begins in the United States, with plans to expand globally in the coming weeks.

Unlike conventional in-car systems, Google Gemini enables drivers to engage in fluid, multi-step conversations. Users can plan trips, discover destinations, locate restaurants along their route, and even manage messages hands-free. The system also integrates with Google Maps and media apps to deliver personalized recommendations, enhancing convenience and safety while driving.

Volvo drivers can, for example, ask for travel ideas, request nearby dining options with reviews and parking details, or have messages summarized and translated in real time. The assistant can also adjust music and entertainment preferences based on mood, creating a more personalized in-car environment.

The feature will be available in Volvo models equipped with Google built-in systems dating back to 2020, including popular vehicles such as the Volvo XC90 and Volvo XC60, as well as newer electric models.

According to Alwin Bakkenes, Head of Global Software Engineering at Volvo Cars, the integration reflects the company’s focus on human-centric technology designed to simplify everyday driving experiences. Meanwhile, Patrick Brady highlighted that Gemini aims to reduce complexity and help drivers stay focused on the road.

The introduction of Google Gemini builds on Volvo’s broader software strategy, which includes over-the-air updates and the recent launch of a redesigned infotainment interface. By partnering closely with Google as a lead development collaborator, Volvo Cars continues to push the boundaries of in-car digital innovation.

With this move, Volvo Cars reinforces its commitment to combining safety, connectivity, and cutting-edge AI to deliver a smarter and more intuitive driving experience.
