February 2024 Sees 10.1% Surge in New Car Registrations; Battery Electric Cars Hold 12% Market Share

In February 2024, the EU’s car market registered an uptick of 10.1% compared to the same period last year, totaling 883,608 units. France (+13%) and Italy (+12.8%) experienced double-digit growth among the four major EU markets, followed by Spain (+9.9%) and Germany (+5.4%).

Over the first two months of 2024, car registrations surged by 11.2% to 1.7 million units. Major markets within the bloc, including Germany (+11.8%), Italy (+11.7%), France (+11.2%), and Spain (+8.7%), exhibited strong single-digit or double-digit growth.

In February, battery-electric cars maintained a market share of 12%, unchanged from February 2023, while hybrid-electric cars accounted for almost 29%. The collective market share of petrol and diesel cars stood at 48.4% in February 2024, marking a decline from 51.9% the previous year.

In February 2024, sales of battery-electric cars experienced a modest 9% growth, reaching 106,187 units, while maintaining a steady market share of 12%. Notably, Belgium (+66.9%), France (+31.8%), and the Netherlands (+20.9%) witnessed significant double-digit increases, while Germany saw a decline of 15.4%.

The sales of new hybrid-electric cars surged by 24.7%, fueled by substantial growth in France (+41.5%), Spain (+26.5%), Germany (+16.4%), and Italy (+16.1%), which collectively contribute to over 70% of EU sales. The total sales reached 255,511, constituting 28.9% of the market.

Additionally, registrations of plug-in hybrid electric cars also registered an 11.6% increase, totaling 64,351 units, driven by strong growth in key markets such as Germany (+22.3%), Belgium (+21.8%), and France (+11.8%). Plug-in hybrid electric cars now account for 7.3% of EU car sales.
