IIT Kharagpur researchers have developed an affordable, smart controller that is efficient and affordable for e-Rickshaws.

The smart controller is part of a programme of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology for the indigenous development of subsystems for electric vehicles.

More than 90% of the electric vehicles’ components and technology including battery management system/ charger/motor/controller/converter are being imported and these are not suitable for road, traffic conditions, and the Indian environment.

Technology development for two and three-wheelers was initially pursued as it accounts for more than 80% of vehicles on the roads.

The smart controller has a BLDC, brushless DC Motor, which is an electric motor that is powered by a direct current voltage supply. It can be commutated electronically rather than by brushes as in traditional DC motors.

As part of Digital India Week, which was inaugurated on July 4, at Gandhinagar by Narendra Modi, Prime Minister. The technology was transferred to Brushless Motor India in commercial production.
