Switch Mobility, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland will invest Rs 1,000 crore in an electric vehicle facility in South India. The plant might be located near Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The EV facility will manufacture 30,000 electric light commercial vehicles (eLCVs) and will also launch 10,000 electric buses. Ashok Leyland will shift its other EV manufacturing operations to this plant once the plant is ready for operation.

Currently, Ashok Leyland is manufacturing electric buses in its Ennore plant in Tamil Nadu. The company will also use some space in its Hosur plant for eLCVs.

Mahesh Babu, Chief Operating Officer of Switch Mobility, said, “We are exploring many locations. We have not yet decided. Our intention is to close it in the next six months. The total capacity, to be ramped up in phases, will stand at over 40,000 units with e-LCVs having a share above 30,000.”

Mahesh Babu added, “We will not do a soft launch. After the launch we will probably get a ramp-up immediately.”
