Tamil Nadu to get more than 650 EV charging stations on national highways which connects Chennai with other cities including Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, and Thiruvananthapuram.

As per the experts, EV sales will boost by increasing charging infrastructure in the state. Currently, Tamil Nadu has 45300 electric vehicles, seventh in the country.

No charging station has been set up with funds of the government under the FAME scheme in the state. The central government sanctioned 650 charging stations for the state under the second phase of the FAME scheme.

“Once the business viability picks up, the EV charging network will develop organically. But it is harder to answer if it is enough. In the larger context, maybe there are not enough EVs to have a much denser charging network,” someone said.

A universal charging model should be introduced, similar to the conventional petrol and diesel vehicles’ fuel refilling tanks.

“Right now, every manufacturer, be it Ola, Ather, or Bounce, have adopted different technologies and there is no clarity whether all EVs can be charged at public charging stations,” an EV maker said.

It takes around 4 to 8 hours for an electric car to get fully charged. But with battery and fast charging technology, this can come down to 20 minutes in the future.
