India’s electric two-wheeler market showed steady growth in January 2026, reflecting the country’s rising shift toward clean and sustainable mobility. Data from the Vahan Portal shows that total electric two-wheeler sales reached 122,757 units during the month. This marks a strong year-on-year improvement and highlights growing consumer confidence in electric vehicles, even as the wider automotive industry continues to face global and domestic challenges.
The steady performance of the electric two-wheeler segment is driven by several factors. Rising fuel prices have increased the cost of owning and running petrol-powered scooters and motorcycles, encouraging many buyers to consider electric options. Electric two-wheelers offer lower running and maintenance costs, making them more attractive, especially for daily commuters. At the same time, manufacturers have expanded their portfolios by launching models across different price segments, helping electric vehicles reach a wider group of customers.
Government support has also played a key role in boosting adoption. Financial incentives, subsidies, and supportive policies at both the central and state levels have helped reduce upfront costs for buyers. These measures have also strengthened consumer trust in electric vehicle technology. The continued focus on electric mobility under national programs has created a more stable and encouraging environment for both manufacturers and customers.
In January, TVS Motor emerged as the market leader with sales of 34,549 electric two-wheelers, capturing a 28.14% market share. The company’s focus on product reliability, customer satisfaction, and consistent supply has helped it maintain a strong position. Bajaj Auto ranked second with 25,595 units sold, accounting for 20.9% of the market, driven by steady demand for its electric models. Ather Energy secured third place with sales of 21,968 units and a 17.9% share. Hero Motocorp followed with 13,300 units, holding a 10.8% share, while Ola Electric sold 7,515 units, representing 6.1% of total sales.
Together, these five manufacturers sold 96,948 units, making up nearly 83.8% of total electric two-wheeler sales for the month. This shows a high level of market concentration among leading players. Other companies also contributed to overall growth. Greaves Electric Mobility sold 5,337 units, while River Mobility recorded sales of 2,583 units, focusing mainly on practical and affordable scooters. Brands such as Bgauss Auto, E-Sprinto Green Energy, and Pur Energy Intellicorp continued to show stable performance.
Despite global supply chain uncertainties, India’s push for localized electric vehicle manufacturing has helped reduce import dependence and stabilize prices. The GST Council’s decision to maintain a low 5% tax rate on electric vehicles, compared to 18% for conventional vehicles, has further supported affordability.
With continued government initiatives like the FAME scheme, rising investment, improving battery technology, and expanding charging infrastructure, India’s electric two-wheeler market is expected to grow further. Increasing environmental awareness and ongoing innovation are likely to strengthen the segment’s role in India’s journey toward sustainable mobility.
