Ola Electric has achieved a major milestone in India’s electric mobility journey after its flagship electric motorcycle, the Roadster X+ (9.1 kWh), received government certification under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989 from the International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT), Manesar. With this approval, Ola Electric is set to commence deliveries of the Roadster X+, making it the first electric motorcycle in India to be certified with a completely in-house developed 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack.

The Roadster X+ sets a new benchmark in the electric two-wheeler segment with an industry-leading claimed range of up to 500 km on a single charge. Enabled by the high energy density and advanced thermal performance of Ola Electric’s indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cell technology, the motorcycle aims to make long-distance and inter-city electric riding viable beyond urban centres.

By addressing range anxiety at a fundamental level, the Roadster X+ is expected to accelerate EV adoption in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where longer commuting distances and limited charging infrastructure have traditionally slowed the transition to electric mobility. The model positions electric motorcycles as a practical alternative in India’s motorcycle-dominated two-wheeler market.

Commenting on the development, an Ola Electric spokesperson said that the certification marks a defining moment in the company’s journey towards building end-to-end EV technology in India. The spokesperson added that the Roadster X+ delivers unmatched range, performance, safety, and reliability, powered entirely by Ola Electric’s own cell and battery technology.

With the Roadster X+ approval, Ola Electric has now extended its in-house 4680 Bharat Cell platform across its two-wheeler portfolio, covering both electric scooters and motorcycles. The same cell architecture will also support the company’s upcoming platforms, further reinforcing its vertically integrated strategy spanning cell development, battery packs, and vehicle manufacturing.

The certification followed a comprehensive validation programme mandated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for Battery Operated Vehicles (BoV). The Roadster X+ successfully underwent rigorous testing, including vehicle safety, electrical systems, range, gradeability, braking, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), noise, and environmental performance, ensuring compliance with the highest regulatory standards.

In addition, the 9.1 kWh battery pack built on the 4680 Bharat Cell recently received ARAI certification under AIS-156 Amendment 4. The battery cleared stringent safety and durability tests such as water immersion, thermal runaway and fire safety, vibration, and mechanical shock, underscoring Ola Electric’s focus on battery safety and robustness.

The milestone strengthens Ola Electric’s vision of developing world-class electric mobility solutions from India, supported by deep vertical integration and an expanding domestic manufacturing ecosystem for EVs and advanced cell technologies.
