In a powerful push toward a greener future, the City of Tacoma, in partnership with Tacoma Public Utilities and the Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability, has significantly expanded its public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure downtown. As part of the Downtown EV Charging Expansion Project, 21 new EV chargers have been installed across seven City-operated lots and garages, nearly doubling the number of chargers available in the city’s core.
With this rollout, Tacoma now boasts 51 public EV chargers downtown, including 47 Level 2 chargers and 2 DC fast chargers, with 13 more expected to go live soon. Two of the new chargers are strategically placed near I-705 to ensure accessibility for commuters and visitors alike.
“Nearly doubling the number of publicly accessible EV chargers in Tacoma’s downtown core is a major step forward in our commitment to clean transportation and climate resilience,” said Mayor Victoria Woodards. “This expansion not only supports our 2030 electrification goals—it also ensures that downtown remains accessible, future-ready, and welcoming to residents and visitors who are making the switch to electric.”
Council Member Kristina Walker emphasized the environmental and public health benefits of the initiative. “By providing more charging options downtown, we are supporting a shift to more sustainable transportation and helping to make the air we breathe cleaner.”
The city will celebrate this electrification milestone with a public “plugging-in” event, spotlighting the two newly installed DC fast charging stations. The event aims to highlight Tacoma’s ongoing efforts to promote climate-friendly infrastructure while encouraging community involvement in the clean energy transition.
