The Delhi government has extended its existing Electric Vehicle (EV) policy by an additional 15 days, ensuring policy continuity until the launch of a revamped framework. This interim measure follows the expiry of the previous policy and is likely to be the final extension before the introduction of the much-anticipated Delhi EV Policy 2.0.

According to government officials, the draft of the new policy is complete and will be unveiled shortly, potentially next month. The revised policy aims to further accelerate the adoption of electric mobility in the capital, with a particular emphasis on electric cars and buses. It also seeks to reduce reliance on petrol, diesel, and CNG vehicles by introducing targeted disincentives.

The existing EV policy offers a variety of financial incentives to encourage the shift toward electric mobility. These include subsidies of up to ₹5,500 for e-cycles, ₹30,000 for e-rickshaws and e-carts, ₹5,000 per kWh (up to ₹30,000) for electric two-wheelers, and ₹30,000 for e-light commercial vehicles.

The upcoming EV Policy 2.0 is expected to include infrastructure-focused reforms, such as mandatory EV charging provisions for 20% of parking spaces in new constructions and 5% in existing buildings. Large parking facilities may also be required to dedicate space for EV chargers.

Furthermore, the policy proposes a phased transition to electric vehicles for all waste collection fleets operated by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), and other civic agencies. The goal is to achieve a fully electric fleet by 2027, reinforcing Delhi’s ambition to lead the country in sustainable urban transport.
