As of February 8, 2025, data from the e-Vahan portal of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways shows that 56.75 lakh electric vehicles have been registered across India, out of a total of 3,897.71 lakh registered vehicles.

The PM E-DRIVE scheme aims to make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable across the country, including in rural and semi-urban areas. It provides targeted subsidies and demand incentives for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers to encourage widespread adoption. To address concerns about charging infrastructure and range anxiety, the scheme also includes an allocation of ₹2,000 crore for the installation of charging stations nationwide.

The scheme focuses on offering affordable and environmentally friendly public transport options. It primarily applies to vehicles used for public transportation or those registered for commercial purposes, such as electric three-wheelers, e-trucks, and other emerging EV categories. It covers the entire country, including Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, to ensure a broader transition to sustainable mobility.
