Suzuki Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation announced a new milestone in their ongoing collaboration: the supply of a Suzuki-developed battery electric vehicle (BEV) SUV to Toyota, set for production in Suzuki’s Gujarat, India, plant from spring 2025. This marks the companies’ first electric vehicle collaboration in their Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) partnership, extending their lineup of joint offerings into the growing SUV segment.
The two automakers, which share deep roots in Enshu, Shizuoka Prefecture, have worked together since 2016, with a focus on providing accessible mobility options worldwide. Their partnership has already delivered significant results, including production and supply of vehicles across Japan, India, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. With this all-electric SUV, they now aim to further their commitment to a carbon-neutral future.
The new model is designed as a BEV from the ground up, combining an extended range and spacious cabin with sharp BEV-driven handling. It includes an optional 4WD system, tailored for rugged terrains and powerful performance. Jointly developed with Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd., the BEV platform leverages each company’s strengths in electrification and manufacturing efficiency.
Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki expressed his optimism about the alliance, stating, “We are proud to supply our first BEV to Toyota globally. While continuing to be competitors, we will deepen collaborations to address pressing social issues, including carbon neutrality.”
Toyota President Koji Sato added, “This partnership allows us to bring diverse electrified options to global customers, advancing our carbon-neutral mission. Learning from each other and sharing strengths, we look forward to the future of multi-pathway solutions in our industry.”
With this joint electric SUV, Suzuki and Toyota are poised to offer a powerful new choice for environmentally conscious consumers worldwide, underscoring their commitment to sustainable mobility.

Collaborative EV development is indeed a smart approach to accelerate e-mobility for sustainability and broader market acceptance. The global industry has successfully leveraged similar strategic alliances in the non-EV space, which has proven beneficial for the entire mobility ecosystem. This kind of partnership could be pivotal in driving the next wave of sustainable transportation.
