Volkswagen Group and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) have inked a milestone supply agreement concerning components of Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) for Mahindra’s bespoke electric platform, INGLO, marking a significant stride in their joint commitment to e-mobility collaboration. This agreement encompasses the provision of specific electric components alongside unified cells. It signifies a deeper level of cooperation between Volkswagen and Mahindra, building upon their initial partnering agreement and term sheet established in 2022. Both entities are actively exploring avenues for expanding their collaboration further.
Mahindra will become the inaugural external partner to embrace Volkswagen’s pioneering unified cell concept, a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s battery strategy. This supply agreement, spanning multiple years, is projected to reach a total volume of approximately 50 GWh throughout its lifespan. Volkswagen Group and Mahindra are united in their objective to bolster their e-mobility presence within the Indian automotive market and expedite the electrification process in the region.
Mahindra has outlined plans to introduce five all-electric SUV models in India, based on its newly developed purpose-built electric platform, INGLO, with the initial launch slated for December 2024. With India boasting a staggering annual new vehicle count exceeding five million in 2023, it stands as one of the world’s largest automotive markets. The electrification drive within the passenger car segment is poised to witness substantial growth in the coming years.
Volkswagen’s MEB platform and its accompanying components are utilized by a roster of Group brands including Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda, and SEAT/CUPRA, in addition to external partners such as Ford and Mahindra. Spearheaded by Volkswagen Group Technology and its “Platform Business” unit, in close collaboration with Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd., the partnership with Mahindra is geared towards fostering innovation and driving e-mobility advancements.
