The Assam government has introduced ‘Baayu,’ an app-based electric bike taxi service, marking a groundbreaking and environmentally conscious initiative by the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC).

Unveiled by Assam Minister of Transport Parimal Suklabaidya, this service, developed in collaboration with Bikozee Ecotech, is India’s first 100% electric and decentralized bike taxi offering.

Baayu aims to provide 5,000 employment opportunities for drivers in Assam, promoting eco-friendly transportation while adhering to the Assam Aggregator rules of 2022. This innovative venture is set to significantly reduce carbon emissions and save Rs 73 crore annually in fuel costs.

Supported by NITI Aayog’s Shoonya Zero Pollution Mobility campaign, “Baayu – Clean Air Movement” contributes to improving air quality and public health by deploying electric vehicles in the transport and logistics sectors.

The initiative utilizes decentralized technologies of the Beckn protocol on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Baayu, a pioneering sustainable mobility project, underscores the Assam government’s commitment to economic growth, entrepreneurship, and environmentally responsible practices, making Assam the first state in India to offer a 100% electric and decentralized bike taxi service.
