SAIC Motor has reported robust sales performance for the first quarter of 2026, with total wholesale volumes reaching 973,000 units, marking a 3% year-on-year increase. The company also recorded retail sales exceeding one million units, making it the only automaker in China to cross this milestone during the period.
In March alone, SAIC Motor sold 376,000 vehicles, securing its third consecutive monthly sales lead this year. The growth was largely driven by strong performance from its self-owned brands and new energy vehicles (NEVs), alongside a steady recovery in joint venture operations.
Self-owned brands emerged as a key growth engine, contributing 657,000 units in Q1, up 9.3% year-on-year and accounting for nearly 68% of total sales. SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicles posted a significant 40.4% increase, while premium EV brand IM Motors saw an impressive 96.9% surge in sales. Models such as the Roewe i6 and MG4X are expected to further strengthen the company’s position in the intelligent EV segment.
NEVs continued to be a major highlight, with cumulative sales reaching 270,000 units in the first quarter. SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle alone recorded a 214.6% jump in NEV sales, while SAIC-GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling also posted strong triple-digit growth. The popular MG4 maintained consistent demand, surpassing 10,000 monthly sales for six consecutive months.
SAIC Motor also reported strong traction in global markets, with overseas sales climbing 48.3% year-on-year to 325,000 units. The MG brand remained a standout performer in Europe, maintaining its position as the top-selling Chinese automotive brand in the region for 11 consecutive years.
The company’s expanding global presence is supported by advancements in technologies such as semi-solid-state batteries and hybrid systems, which have received positive feedback for safety and performance. Additionally, SAIC Motor continues to accelerate its product pipeline, unveiling multiple new models including the IM LS8 SUV and the next-generation Wuling Hongguang MINIEV.
With a strategy focused on innovation, electrification, and global expansion, SAIC Motor aims to sustain its growth momentum and strengthen its leadership in both domestic and international markets throughout 2026.
