Audi has unveiled the new Audi RS 5, marking a significant milestone as its first performance-oriented plug-in hybrid. The model introduces a world-first innovation: quattro with Dynamic Torque Control, delivering electromechanical torque vectoring at the rear axle for unprecedented agility and precision.
At the heart of the new RS 5 lies a modular high-performance hybrid system paired with a newly engineered rear transaxle. This setup enables lightning-fast torque distribution between the rear wheels—adjusting within just 15 milliseconds—enhancing stability, traction, and cornering dynamics even under extreme driving conditions.
The electromechanical torque vectoring system uses a 400-volt electric motor acting as a high-voltage actuator, supported by overdrive gears and a differential. Together, they enable precise torque allocation independent of throttle input or braking, a major advancement over traditional mechanical systems.
This technology allows the RS 5 to dynamically adapt during cornering. For instance, when oversteering occurs, torque is shifted to stabilize the vehicle, while understeer is countered by directing power to the outer wheel for improved grip. The system can generate torque differences of up to 2,000 Nm between the rear wheels, ensuring optimal control.
Audi’s central High-Performance Computing Platform (HCP1) coordinates the drivetrain and suspension systems, analyzing real-time data and driver inputs to predict and respond to driving intentions. This results in a seamless and intuitive driving experience across various drive select modes—from balanced comfort to aggressive, rear-biased dynamics.
In addition to enhancing performance, the system improves safety by maintaining vehicle stability during rapid transitions. It works in harmony with front-axle systems such as the electronic differential lock and brake torque vectoring, as well as adaptive twin-valve shock absorbers, ensuring a cohesive and responsive driving feel.
Audi emphasizes that this innovation is not just about performance, but also about accessibility. The new RS 5 offers a wide spectrum of driving modes, allowing drivers to tailor the experience to their preferences while maintaining confidence and control.
