Honda Cars India Ltd. has officially flagged off a pan-India test run of its first upcoming electric SUV, marking a major milestone in the company’s electrification journey in the country. The move signals the beginning of Public Road Verification testing as Honda prepares to enter India’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle (EV) segment.
The prototype model, globally known as Honda 0 α, was first showcased at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. The ongoing test programme will assess the vehicle’s performance across diverse Indian conditions, including highways, urban roads, and challenging terrains.
According to the company, the testing will focus on key parameters such as durability, ride comfort, handling, efficiency, and overall reliability. The SUV will also undergo rigorous trials in extreme heat and monsoon conditions, along with evaluation of charging performance across multiple charging infrastructures to ensure real-world usability.
Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO of Honda Cars India, stated that the initiative is a critical step in Honda’s EV roadmap. He emphasized that India’s unique driving and climate conditions require extensive real-world testing to deliver a product tailored to local needs. The programme combines Honda’s global engineering expertise with insights specific to Indian customers.
The upcoming electric SUV is being developed to cater to both urban commuting and lifestyle-oriented usage. It is expected to support a wide range of everyday driving needs, making it a practical offering for Indian buyers transitioning to electric mobility.
Honda has confirmed that the model is slated for a global debut in the financial year 2026–27, with India and Japan identified as key markets. Notably, the vehicle will be manufactured in India and exported to international markets, reinforcing the country’s role in Honda’s global EV strategy.
With this development, Honda joins a growing list of automakers accelerating EV plans in India, where demand is steadily shifting toward sustainable mobility solutions. The company aims to leverage its reputation for reliability, safety, and engineering excellence to establish a strong foothold in the electric SUV segment.
