Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global mining giant Rio Tinto to establish a strategic partnership aimed at advancing low-carbon technologies, electrification, and circular economy solutions in the resources and energy sectors.

The agreement, announced on March 3, 2026, brings together a leading new-energy technology company and one of the world’s largest mining groups at a time when industries are accelerating efforts toward decarbonisation and electrification.

Under the partnership, both companies will collaborate across three major areas: strategic electrification and innovation, supply chain and circular economy initiatives, and new commercial and partnership models. A key focus will be the deployment of battery-electric equipment in mining operations, which is expected to significantly reduce emissions from heavy industrial activities.

The collaboration will also explore opportunities for the supply of battery materials, while advancing battery recycling technologies and the recovery of critical minerals. These initiatives aim to strengthen supply chains and support the development of a circular ecosystem for battery materials, improving sustainability and resource efficiency across the industry.

Speaking about the partnership, Zheng Shu, Chief Financial Officer of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, said the company is proud to partner with Rio Tinto, which has more than 150 years of experience in mining and sustainability leadership.

Zheng added that combining CATL’s expertise in battery systems, energy storage, power electronics, grid-forming technologies, and recycling solutions with Rio Tinto’s operational excellence will help develop next-generation zero-carbon mining solutions with global demonstration value.

Meanwhile, Bold Baatar, Chief Commercial Officer at Rio Tinto, highlighted that cross-industry cooperation will be essential as demand for low-carbon solutions continues to rise. He said the collaboration provides a strong foundation for exploring innovative industrial models in areas such as emissions reduction, electrification, and circular economy development.

The two companies will also examine potential commercial frameworks and joint projects to accelerate innovation and strengthen long-term industry growth.

The agreement reflects a shared commitment by Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited and Rio Tinto to support the global energy transition by improving sustainability across both the battery value chain and mining sector. Further discussions are expected to define detailed cooperation plans and establish new benchmarks for sustainable resource development and low-carbon industrial ecosystems.
