Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has announced a strategic partnership with EnergyHub, a leading provider of grid-edge flexibility solutions, to expand utility-managed EV charging programs across North America. The collaboration aims to unlock electric vehicles as flexible grid resources while improving the charging experience for customers.
Under the partnership, Rivian drivers will gain easier access to utility EV programs, with both passive and active managed charging integrated directly into the Rivian ecosystem. The initiative is expected to simplify enrollment, reduce charging costs, and enable smarter charging aligned with local grid conditions.
EnergyHub’s grid-aware managed charging technology will help dynamically balance electricity demand across distribution systems, ensuring drivers receive the energy they need while respecting local grid capacity constraints. As part of EnergyHub’s Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platform, connected EVs will be optimized alongside thermostats, batteries, and other distributed energy resources to enhance grid reliability.
Utilities will be able to enroll and manage EVs through EnergyHub’s Edge Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS), enabling the creation of dispatchable virtual power plants that deliver real-time grid flexibility. EnergyHub currently supports more than 170 utilities, managing over 2.5 million distributed energy resources and more than 3.5 GW of flexible capacity.
Industry experts say the partnership highlights how automakers and grid-edge software providers can collaborate to ensure rapid EV adoption strengthens rather than strains electricity infrastructure, while delivering tangible benefits for both drivers and utilities.
