The BMW Group, in partnership with German energy major E.ON, has launched Germany’s first commercial Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) charging solution for private customers, marking a major milestone in integrating electric vehicles into the energy ecosystem.
The new offering, debuting with BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup and the upcoming BMW iX3, enables customers to charge their vehicles at home while also feeding electricity back into the grid. Through a combination of the BMW Wallbox Professional, an E.ON V2G electricity tariff, and a smart metering system, customers can actively participate in grid stabilization and renewable energy integration.
Under the V2G program, BMW iX3 customers can earn bonuses of up to €720 annually, allowing them to drive up to 14,000 kilometres per year at no charging cost, depending on usage. Additionally, the first 100 customers will receive a €700 discount on the bidirectional BMW Wallbox Professional, one of the first bidirectional wallboxes available in the market with intelligent charging modes.
Charging and discharging processes are managed by a jointly developed BMW–E.ON algorithm, while users can monitor charging levels and bonus status through the My BMW App. Intelligent battery protection systems ensure the high-voltage battery operates within an optimal range.
The V2G initiative is designed to support the broader energy transition by enabling electric vehicles to act as flexible energy storage systems, helping stabilize the grid during periods of high demand or surplus renewable generation. Customers are also compensated for each kilowatt-hour of electricity fed back into the grid.
As an alternative, BMW and E.ON also introduced a cost-optimized smart charging solution for all BMW and MINI electric drivers in Germany, allowing vehicles to charge automatically when electricity prices are low. Customers using the special E.ON tariff can save up to €240 annually, with additional bonuses available for new users.
Filip Thon, CEO of E.ON Germany, described the launch as a breakthrough in linking electromobility with the energy transition, while Marcus Krieg, Head of New Business Models at BMW Group, said BMW vehicles are becoming active components of the energy ecosystem for the first time.
The launch underscores BMW Group’s strategy to integrate electric vehicles into future energy systems and accelerate the transition toward sustainable and intelligent mobility.
