NPCI Bharat BillPay Limited (NBBL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is strengthening India’s digital payments ecosystem for electric mobility with the launch of the ‘EV Recharge’ category on Bharat Connect. The new service, unveiled during the Global Fintech Fest 2025, enables electric vehicle (EV) owners to seamlessly top up their EV wallets through Bharat Connect-enabled apps and platforms.

India’s EV market has witnessed rapid growth over the past decade. According to a NITI Aayog report, EV sales increased from 50,000 units in 2016 to 2.08 million units in 2024, with the country targeting 30% EV penetration in total vehicle sales by 2030. Despite this momentum, EV users have often faced fragmented charging and payment experiences, requiring multiple apps to manage charging needs.

NBBL’s new initiative addresses this challenge by integrating major EV wallet providers and charging networks into a single, interoperable framework. Built on Bharat Connect’s API-driven infrastructure, the EV Recharge category offers users a consistent and hassle-free payment experience across partner applications, reducing friction and improving convenience.

As of August 2025, India has 29,277 public EV charging stations, according to the Ministry of Power (MoP). With EV wallet top-ups now available on Bharat Connect-enabled apps and websites, customers can manage balances for charging networks such as Tata EZ Charge and Zeon Charging. Payments can be completed using familiar modes including UPI, debit and credit cards, net banking, and wallets, with instant confirmations and digital transaction records ensuring transparency.

Commenting on the launch, Ms. Noopur Chaturvedi, Managing Director and CEO, NBBL, said, “As electric mobility becomes central to India’s transport landscape, offering a dependable solution for EV wallet recharges is essential. By integrating this service into Bharat Connect’s expansive biller network, we are leveraging its reach and interoperability to deliver a unified experience for EV users nationwide. The ‘EV Recharge’ category is designed for scalability and convenience and will continue to evolve alongside India’s growing EV adoption.”

The initiative reinforces NBBL’s role as a trusted enabler of essential digital payment services while extending its support to a critical segment of India’s clean mobility transition. It also enhances visibility for ecosystem participants by improving discoverability and providing access to a large, nationwide digital payments network.
