Ford Motor Company has announced the next generation of its flagship electric pickup, the F-150 Lightning, introducing advanced Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology aimed at setting new benchmarks for performance, range and towing capability in the EV truck segment.
The next-gen F-150 Lightning EREV is designed to deliver a pure electric driving experience while addressing one of the biggest challenges faced by electric pickups—long-distance travel and heavy-duty towing. Unlike conventional hybrids, the new Lightning EREV is powered 100 percent by electric motors, ensuring instant torque, quiet operation and smooth acceleration. A high-power onboard generator supports the electric system, enabling an estimated driving range of more than 700 miles.
Ford says the EREV setup allows drivers to tow heavy loads over long distances without frequent charging stops, making cross-country travel and demanding work applications significantly more practical. The model will continue to offer exportable electricity, allowing owners to power tools at job sites, equipment at campsites or even homes during power outages—an increasingly important feature for EV truck customers.
Commenting on the announcement, Doug Field, Ford’s chief EV, digital and design officer, said the next-generation Lightning builds on the success of the current model while dramatically expanding its capabilities. He noted that the combination of near-instant electric torque and generator-backed extended range will make heavy-duty towing and long journeys as effortless as daily commuting.
The F-150 Lightning has played a key role in Ford’s EV growth and currently holds the position of America’s best-selling electric pickup. The upcoming EREV variant reinforces the F-Series legacy by combining electric performance with the reliability and versatility expected from Ford’s most iconic truck lineup.
Ford confirmed that production of the current F-150 Lightning will end later this year. The next-generation F-150 Lightning EREV will be assembled at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan. Additional details regarding specifications and launch timelines are expected to be shared at a later date.
