SparkCharge, the world’s largest EV fleet charging network, has partnered with the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) and Zipcar to deploy its first off-grid mobile DC fast-charging hub for shared electric vehicles in the Northeast. The pilot installation, located at Zipcar’s maintenance facility in the Environmental Justice community of East Boston, introduces a scalable model for EV charging that operates independently of traditional electrical grid infrastructure.
The initiative has been funded through MassCEC’s InnovateMass program and is designed to support a rotating fleet of Zipcar EVs. The system will enable rapid on-site charging, allowing vehicles to be dispatched quickly to serve communities across Greater Boston, including rideshare users and Zipcar members.
Joshua Aviv, Founder and CEO of SparkCharge, said the deployment demonstrates how mobile charging can accelerate equitable access to electrified transportation. “With this program in East Boston, we’re showing how fleets can deploy at scale, in any community, and deliver clean mobility today,” he said. “This is about more than charging — you’re seeing a future where shared vehicles power equitable access, cleaner air, and mobility freedom for all.”
At the center of the project is SparkCharge’s mobile battery-powered trailer, capable of delivering 320 kW DC fast charging. The system supplements its stored energy by drawing power from existing onsite sources, allowing high-speed charging without overwhelming the local grid. By eliminating the need for expensive fixed-site upgrades, the pilot provides a flexible, cost-efficient charging solution that can be rapidly deployed.
MassCEC Senior Director of Technology-to-Market Leslie Nash described the project as a model for future EV infrastructure deployment. “Every resident deserves access to clean, reliable transportation,” Nash said. “By partnering with SparkCharge and Zipcar in East Boston, we’re showing how Massachusetts is leading the way in clean transportation innovation.”
Fleet electrification is expected to play a critical role in achieving Massachusetts’ net-zero emissions commitment by 2050. The new hub strengthens EV service availability in neighborhoods historically underserved by public charging infrastructure.
Zipcar President Angelo Adams said the collaboration aligns with the company’s long-standing mobility mission. “Working with SparkCharge and MassCEC allows us to bring fast, reliable EV charging directly to our members and rideshare drivers, making clean transportation more accessible across Boston,” Adams said.
The partnership marks a significant milestone in advancing clean mobility solutions and reinforces SparkCharge’s strategy to expand a flexible, future-ready EV charging network across North America.
