Volvo Buses has received a major order for 73 new electric buses from Vy Buss, marking a decisive step toward fully electrifying public transport in the Swedish city of Borås. The order includes 46 Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated buses, 14 Volvo 7900 Electric, and 13 Volvo 8900 Electric, all scheduled to begin operations by April 2027.

According to Volvo Buses, the delivery will make all city bus services in Borås completely electric, reinforcing the region’s commitment to sustainable and climate-smart mobility. “It is especially rewarding to receive this order for Borås, where much of our bus manufacturing has its roots,” said Martin Spjern, Country Manager Sweden at Volvo Buses. “This investment marks a significant leap forward for the region’s sustainable public transport.”

The new electric fleet will operate across both city routes and regional connections, including services to Viared, home to Volvo Buses’ major manufacturing facility. The order further highlights Volvo’s longstanding industrial presence in Borås, whose bus plant became one of the world’s first to run entirely on renewable energy in 2020.

Spjern added that a comprehensive solution developed jointly with dealer Boråsbil—including service contracts, depot support, and uptime-focused plans—played an important role in securing the tender.

Vy Buss CEO Robert Nyberg called the shift to electric buses a crucial step in creating a climate-smart transit system. “This agreement with Volvo Buses marks the start of a long-term partnership to develop public transport in Borås,” he said.

Production of the new buses will involve a combined manufacturing process, with chassis built at Volvo’s Borås facility and bodywork supplied by partner MCV. Volvo Buses emphasized its holistic sustainability approach, offering transparency across the entire production cycle.

The company’s electromobility portfolio includes the Volvo 7900 Electric, 7900 Electric Articulated, 8900 Electric, and the Volvo BZR and BZL electric platforms, reflecting Volvo’s growing push toward zero-emission passenger transport worldwide.
