Volvo Cars’ flagship electric SUV, the EX90, has secured a five-star rating in the latest round of Euro NCAP safety assessments, placing it among the highest-scoring cars tested this year. The independent European safety body awarded the company’s new seven-seat EV top marks for both adult and child occupant protection.

Euro NCAP, regarded as Europe’s most trusted vehicle safety evaluator, highlighted the EX90’s robust crash protection and preventive safety technologies. Volvo says the EX90’s performance reflects more than five decades of its real-world crash research across 50,000 accidents involving over 80,000 people.

“Volvo Cars has long been a pioneer in automotive safety, and the EX90 is the latest example of that leadership,” said Åsa Haglund, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “This result shows that our commitment to real-world protection translates into top performance in independent safety tests.”

The EX90 integrates Volvo’s latest Safe Space Technology—an interconnected suite of sensors, cameras, radars, and software that builds real-time situational awareness to help prevent collisions. Core computing capabilities allow the SUV to process massive amounts of data from its surroundings and adapt over time through over-the-air software updates.

Among its standout features is the driver understanding system, which monitors driver fatigue, distraction, or cognitive overload using real-time sensing. The system, previously recognised as one of TIME magazine’s Best Inventions of 2024, is also offered on the Volvo ES90 sedan.

The EX90 also includes full-cabin occupant sensing using advanced radars capable of detecting movements as subtle as an infant’s breathing—helping ensure no occupant is inadvertently left behind.

With its structural strength, advanced restraint systems, and predictive safety technologies, the EX90 continues to gather global acclaim, including its earlier win as the World Luxury Car of the Year.
