The Mexican state of Jalisco has placed an order for 53 new Volvo electric buses to strengthen Guadalajara’s shift toward sustainable public transportation. The fleet expansion marks a major milestone in Mexico’s transition to cleaner urban mobility and reinforces Volvo Buses’ leadership in the country’s electromobility landscape.
The new order consists of 31 LUMINUS high-floor buses built on the Volvo BZR chassis, 12 LUMINUS low-floor buses on the Volvo BZL chassis, and 10 articulated Volvo 7800 Electric buses. All vehicles will be manufactured locally in Mexico, contributing to national sustainability goals through domestic production, job creation, and a reinforced supply chain.
Rafael Kisel, Managing Director of Volvo Buses Mexico, said the move positions Guadalajara among the nation’s frontrunners in adopting zero-emission mass transit. “This project reflects the state’s forward-looking approach to sustainable public transport and Volvo Buses’ ongoing mission to help cities build cleaner, quieter, and more efficient urban transport systems,” he noted.
The first batch of 12 LUMINUS low-floor buses is scheduled to enter service in December 2025, followed by the remaining units in May 2026. The entire fleet is expected to be fully operational ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, during which Mexico will serve as one of the host nations. Preliminary estimates indicate that the 53 electric buses will reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 35% compared to diesel counterparts—equivalent to over 140 tons of CO₂ savings annually.
Designed for intensive city operations, the buses will primarily rely on night-time depot charging, with CS2 connections available for daytime top-ups to maximize route availability.
While the project focuses solely on vehicle delivery rather than a full turnkey solution, Volvo Buses will continue to provide robust uptime and maintenance support through its extensive national service network.
Kisel added that Guadalajara’s decision reflects long-standing trust in the company’s product reliability. “Our electric buses outperformed others in field tests—particularly in energy efficiency and range—combined with the service support we guarantee,” he said.
