In a significant step toward cleaner and more sustainable electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, the BMW Group has announced that all its operations in Parsdorf — including the high-voltage battery pilot plant — are now officially registered under the European Union’s EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme), considered the world’s most stringent environmental management system.

The inclusion of the Parsdorf high-voltage battery pilot facility, part of BMW’s Cell Manufacturing Competence Centre (CMCC), marks the first time the site has been featured in BMW’s annual Environmental Impact Statement. The certification underscores the company’s commitment to eco-efficient production, transparency, and continuous environmental improvement.

“Achieving EMAS registration for all our Parsdorf operations demonstrates that our processes meet the highest economic and environmental standards,” said Hansjörg Schilp, Director of the CMCC and Pilot Plant for High-Voltage Batteries.

The Parsdorf facilities, which include cell manufacturing, test-parts logistics, and battery pilot lines, operate entirely on renewable electricity. The site also utilizes waste heat recovery and heat pump systems to minimize energy use and carbon emissions. Residual materials from battery production are collected and directly recycled, supporting BMW’s circular economy vision.

At the Parsdorf Gen6 high-voltage battery plant, over 350 employees develop and test next-generation battery systems before mass production begins in BMW’s series plants in Debrecen (Hungary), Shenyang (China), San Luis Potosí (Mexico), and Woodruff (USA). These batteries are designed to power BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse electric models.

BMW’s inclusion in the EMAS register was validated by TÜV SÜD Umweltgutachter GmbH and approved by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Munich and Upper Bavaria.

By integrating circular resource management, renewable energy, and digitalized battery development, BMW’s Parsdorf operations stand as a model for sustainable EV innovation, advancing the company’s global push toward zero-emission mobility and closed-loop battery production.
