In a major step toward sustainable public transport, Continental has strengthened its decade-long partnership with Danish bus operator AarBus, supplying energy-efficient tires designed specifically for electric buses. The collaboration reflects a shared vision to reduce emissions and enhance operational reliability across Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city.
Currently, every second AarBus vehicle is electric, and by 2027, the company plans to operate 168 clean-energy buses, significantly cutting carbon emissions. Since introducing its first four e-buses in 2019, AarBus has saved an estimated 14,095 tons of CO₂ — equivalent to the yearly emissions of over 9,000 cars.
To further optimize fleet efficiency, AarBus has begun integrating Continental’s ContiConnect Live digital tire monitoring system, ensuring consistent tire pressure and minimizing breakdown risks — a crucial factor for EVs with limited range.
Hinnerk Kaiser, Head of Product Development for Bus and Truck Tires EMEA at Continental, emphasized that tires like the Conti Urban HA 5 have been specially engineered for electric drives. “These tires deliver low rolling resistance and high durability, helping bus operators transition smoothly to emission-free mobility,” he said.
The Conti Urban HA 5 tire line features reinforced sidewalls, robust rubber compounds, and sensor compatibility, allowing fleet operators to monitor tire health in real time. This not only improves safety but also supports Continental’s ContiLifeCycle program, which extends tire life and reduces environmental impact through sustainable retreading.
As Europe moves toward the EU goal of 90% emission-free city buses by 2030, Denmark remains a leader in adopting electric transport. AarBus’ ongoing transformation, supported by Continental’s eco-innovations, exemplifies how strategic technology partnerships can accelerate the shift to zero-emission urban mobility.
“With our focus on sustainability, we aim to help our customers meet their environmental goals without compromising performance,” Kaiser added.
Through smarter tire technologies and digital monitoring, Continental is not just supporting AarBus’ journey toward electrification — it’s driving Europe’s public transport sector into a cleaner, more connected future.
