In a bold move to accelerate the global shift toward electric mobility, Volvo Cars has announced the launch of its Free Home Charging Initiative — offering one year of complimentary fossil-free electricity for customers purchasing a new fully electric Volvo in Sweden.
The initiative, developed in partnership with Swedish energy provider Vattenfall, will begin in February 2026, granting eligible customers up to 25,000 kilometers of free electric driving per year. This marks a significant step in making electric vehicle ownership more convenient, affordable, and environmentally responsible.
Smart, Sustainable Charging
Participating customers will receive their free charging through a Vattenfall electricity contract and the smart charging feature in the Volvo Cars app. This feature intelligently schedules charging during periods of lower electricity prices and reduced CO₂ emissions, optimizing both environmental and cost benefits.
The app also enables users to track their car’s energy usage and monitor the battery’s status, while the cost of charging is automatically deducted from their monthly energy bill.
We are listening to our customers, and by providing free charging offers we hope to create value for them and accelerate our collective journey to a smarter, greener society.
A Global Blueprint for Electrification
The Swedish rollout will serve as a test phase before expanding to international markets. Volvo Cars plans to replicate the model through regional partnerships with sustainable energy providers across Europe and beyond.
The company’s long-term vision includes integrating cars into the broader energy ecosystem. Starting in 2026, Volvo will extend the program to bi-directionally enabled vehicles such as the upcoming EX90, allowing owners to power their homes or sell stored energy back to the grid using vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology.
A Partnership Built on Green Innovation
Volvo Cars and Vattenfall share a longstanding history of pioneering sustainable mobility. Their previous collaborations include the launch of the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid, the Volvo V60 (2012), and Vattenfall’s fossil-free energy supply to Volvo’s Torslanda plant in Sweden.
Working together to encourage the use of electric cars with fossil-free electricity, starting in Sweden, is incredibly inspiring. Said Alejandro Castro Pérez, Vice President of Energy Solutions at Volvo Cars.
Driving the Future of Clean Mobility
Volvo currently offers five fully electric models, with the EX60 set for launch in January 2026. Alongside its plug-in and mild hybrid options, the company continues to pursue its goal of becoming a fully electric automaker and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
The Free Home Charging Initiative underlines Volvo Cars’ broader mission: For life — to give people the freedom to move in a personal, sustainable and safe way.
