Volvo Buses has launched the Volvo BZR Electric coach chassis, a new long-distance electromobility solution offering up to 720 kWh battery capacity and a driving range of up to 700 km, according to the SORT 3 test cycle. The innovation marks a significant step forward in making long interregional electric coach travel viable with fewer charging stops.

The new chassis is based on Volvo’s proven global BZR Electric platform and is available in two- or three-axle configurations with four to eight modular battery packs, enabling operators to balance range, efficiency, and operational flexibility.

“Our new electric chassis reaches for more than just extended operating range. It enables new routes and gives operators greater versatility,” said Anna Westerberg, President of Volvo Buses.

The BZR Electric coach chassis supports 250 kW CCS and 450 kW OppCharge fast charging, integrates Volvo’s latest active safety systems, and is designed for both tour & charter services and long-distance routes, including operations in environmental zones. Bodies from different coachbuilders will be available depending on market needs.

Volvo emphasizes that sustainability extends beyond zero tailpipe emissions. “With responsibly sourced materials and a product built to last, we minimize the life-cycle footprint while ensuring comfort, efficiency, and safety,” Westerberg added.

The first bodied unit, developed with Carrus Delta, is slated for customers in the Nordic and Benelux markets.

Key specifications:

  • Length: 9.5–14.9 m
  • GVW: up to 27,200 kg
  • Power output: 200 kW or 400 kW
  • Battery capacity: 360–720 kWh
  • Range: up to 700 km (SORT 3 cycle)

“With this launch, Volvo Buses now offers electromobility solutions across all segments—city, intercity, long-distance, and tour & charter,” said Dan Pettersson, Senior Vice President at Volvo Buses.
