Montra Electric HCV (IPL Tech), the clean mobility brand of the Murugappa Group, has inaugurated its state-of-the-art electric heavy commercial vehicle (eHCV) manufacturing facility in Manesar, marking a major milestone in India’s push toward sustainable freight solutions.
The new factory, spread across 255,000 square feet with a built-up area of 150,000 square feet, has an installed production capacity of 6,000 units per year on a two-shift basis, scalable up to 7,500 units with additional shifts. The facility is designed for flexibility, capable of producing multiple product variants, including the Rhino EV series, along with future introductions.
Key Highlights
1.India’s first all-women, fully automated battery production unit, emphasizing gender inclusivity and women’s empowerment in the EV sector.
2.Advanced automation, with 60% robotics integration and full Industry 4.0 digital manufacturing practices.
3.In-house battery pack assembly capacity of 1.7 GWh and extensive testing infrastructure, including Electrical & Electronics labs, QA labs, battery pack cyclers, roll and brake testers, wheel alignment systems, headlamp aiming, and shower testing facilities.
4.Dedicated R&D and prototype workshops to accelerate product development.
5.Localization strategy, sourcing 74% of components locally (excluding imported cells) to strengthen supply chain resilience.
The facility has been designed with sustainability at its core, incorporating battery recycling, waste management initiatives, and on-site charging infrastructure, with future expansions planned to integrate renewable energy. Montra Electric also plans to engage with local communities through skilling programs and environmental initiatives, such as tree plantation drives.
