As part of their long-standing strategic partnership, BMW Group and E.ON are introducing Germany’s first commercial Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) solution for private users. The BMW iX3, equipped with bidirectional charging, can now not only draw electricity but also feed energy back into the grid, turning everyday electric vehicles into flexible energy storage units—a first in Germany. This innovation marks a significant technological and market milestone, linking electromobility with the country’s energy transition.
How the V2G Solution Works
The system enables BMW iX3 owners to supply energy back to the grid via the BMW Wallbox Professional. Intelligent energy management, developed jointly by BMW Group and E.ON, is paired with a dedicated V2G electricity tariff to facilitate efficient two-way energy flow.
The service is both user-friendly and financially rewarding: customers who participate in smart charging and discharging can earn up to €720 annually. This allows them to drive up to 14,000 kilometers per year at no charging cost while actively contributing to Germany’s energy transition.
