Volvo Buses has secured a landmark order to supply 21 fully electric articulated and bi-articulated buses to Goiânia, marking the first time such vehicles will enter regular operation anywhere in the world.

The deal, struck with GreenMob Capital—an HP Group investment firm specializing in urban mobility projects—includes 16 articulated and 5 bi-articulated Volvo BZRT models. The buses will serve the city’s East-West BRT corridor, a key part of the Metropolitan Collective Transport Network that carries nearly 12 million passengers monthly.

“With this sale, Goiânia is making a decisive move towards decarbonizing its public transport system,” said André Marques, President of Volvo Buses Latin America. “These vehicles combine cutting-edge safety technology, high capacity, and zero emissions—setting a global precedent for sustainable mobility.”

Built at Volvo’s Curitiba plant, the articulated buses can carry up to 180 passengers, while the 28-meter-long bi-articulated version holds 250, making it the largest fully electric vehicle in daily operation worldwide. Features include dual-side doors, air conditioning, advanced driver-assistance systems, and Volvo Dynamic Steering for improved maneuverability. The buses are also GPS-ready for “Safety Zones,” which automatically reduce speed in sensitive areas such as schools and hospitals.

According to GreenMob Capital CEO Gustavo Bacellar de Faria, the project reflects a bold vision: “We are bringing the most advanced vehicle technology available globally to Goiânia—delivering comfort, safety, and efficiency to millions of passengers.”

The BRT network is expected to expand its reach to 17 million passengers monthly, connecting Goiânia to neighboring cities Trindade, Goianira, and Senador Canedo. Deliveries of the new Volvo fleet are slated for 2025.

“This will be the first city in the world to operate a fully electric bi-articulated fleet in daily service,” said Paulo Arabian, Head of Sales, Volvo Buses Brazil. “It represents not only a leap for Brazil, but for urban transport globally.”

The contract was closed through Suécia Veículos, Volvo’s dealership in Central-West and Southeast Brazil, with credit support from Volvo Financial Services.
