In a major push towards sustainable urban mobility, Indian Railways has partnered with Indofast Energy to establish a network of battery swapping stations across key railway stations in the Hyderabad and Secunderabad divisions. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in India’s clean energy transition, aligning with the national goal of boosting electric mobility infrastructure.
Indofast Energy, a 50:50 joint venture between IndianOil and SUN Mobility, has successfully installed 80 swap stations across 25 railway stations — with 56 located under the Secunderabad division and 24 under Hyderabad. An additional 40 stations are planned for deployment over the next three months, further expanding the reach of this initiative.
Spearheaded by South Central Railway, the initiative is expected to improve last-mile connectivity and benefit a wide range of users, including ride-sharing drivers, delivery partners, and daily commuters relying on electric two- and three-wheelers. The strategically placed stations are designed for seamless integration into daily travel routines, enabling fast, affordable, and convenient battery swaps.
“This partnership is a transformative step towards a cleaner transit ecosystem,” said Shri R Gopalakrishnan, Divisional Railway Manager, South Central Railway. “It supports Railway Board’s e-mobility guidelines and showcases the potential of public-private collaboration.”
Anant Badjatya, CEO of Indofast Energy, emphasized the impact of the operational stations: “They are already enhancing last-mile delivery and urban mobility. The demand reaffirms the need for robust, sustainable solutions.”
Indofast Energy aims to scale the network to over 10,000 swap stations in 40+ cities within three years, potentially serving over one million EV users.
The initiative represents a bold step toward decarbonizing transportation infrastructure and fostering an integrated electric mobility ecosystem across India.
