Hindustan Zinc Limited , the world’s largest and India’s only integrated zinc producer, has partnered with GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd., an Essar venture, to initiate one of India’s largest green logistics transitions. The collaboration aims to accelerate Hindustan Zinc’s efforts toward complete decarbonization of its supply chain through the deployment of electric (EV) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trucks.
Under this strategic initiative, GreenLine will invest ₹400 crore to deploy 100 EV trucks and expand Hindustan Zinc’s existing LNG truck fleet by an additional 100 vehicles—doubling it to 200 trucks. The EV trucks will replace diesel vehicles for inter-unit concentrate movement between Hindustan Zinc’s mines and smelters. Additionally, India’s first commercial-scale battery swapping infrastructure will be established with three high-capacity stations to support round-the-clock operations.
“This large-scale deployment of EVs and LNG trucks is a bold step in our journey to net zero,” said Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc. “We are committed to pioneering sustainable practices and driving real impact through strategic partnerships and innovative logistics solutions.”
The green logistics expansion is expected to reduce approximately 236 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions monthly, which is equivalent to planting around 12,000 trees. Annually, the initiative is projected to cut 1.5 lakh tonnes of Scope 3 emissions, aligning with Hindustan Zinc’s commitment to achieve net zero by 2050 or earlier.
The initiative will also bring cost efficiencies through discounted freight rates, supporting India’s broader climate goals.
GreenLine CEO Anand Mimani emphasized the urgency of clean transportation, stating, “This deployment with Hindustan Zinc reflects our shared commitment to decarbonize logistics at scale. Our LNG and EV fleet, manufactured by Blue Energy Motors, demonstrates a practical, impactful shift toward sustainable mobility.”
Hindustan Zinc, recently ranked as the world’s most sustainable company in the metals and mining sector by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024, has outlined ambitious 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. These include reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% and Scope 3 emissions by 25% from the 2020 baseline.
GreenLine currently operates over 650 LNG trucks across key sectors including FMCG, cement, metals, and oil & gas, with its fleet covering over 50 million kilometres and mitigating more than 14,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions to date. The company aims to scale to 10,000 clean trucks and develop a nationwide green mobility ecosystem with LNG refuelling stations, EV charging hubs, and battery swapping facilities.
