Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has officially inaugurated its first overseas assembly plant at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, marking a significant step in its global expansion strategy.
Spread over 400 acres, the Tamil Nadu plant is VinFast’s third operational plant worldwide and the fifth project in its global manufacturing network. Equipped with state-of-the-art automated production lines, the facility features a Body Shop, Paint Shop, Assembly Shop, Quality Control Center, Logistics Hub, and an auxiliary cluster for local contractors, which is set to grow in the coming years.
At full capacity, the plant will generate 3,000–3,500 direct jobs and several thousand indirect jobs, strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position as a manufacturing hub and a potential EV capital of South Asia.
Initially, the plant will assemble VinFast’s premium electric SUVs VF 7 and VF 6, with an annual starting capacity of 50,000 vehicles, scalable up to 150,000 units. This milestone aligns with the company’s 2025 sales target of 200,000 vehicles and its long-term vision to produce 1 million vehicles annually by 2030.
Commenting on the inauguration, Mr. Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia, said: The VinFast Tamil Nadu plant marks a strategic milestone in our commitment to the Indian market. It lays a strong foundation for sustainable growth and positions us to deliver high-quality, competitively priced EVs to Indian consumers. Looking ahead, we plan to expand production and transform Tamil Nadu into VinFast’s largest export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
VinFast’s entry into India goes beyond assembly operations. The company is building a comprehensive EV ecosystem, including distribution, after-sales services, and recycling. It has already partnered with dealer groups in key cities, and tied up with RoadGrid, myTVS, and Global Assure for digital services and customer support. Additionally, its collaboration with BatX Energies will enable battery recovery and reuse, reinforcing VinFast’s push toward circular production and sustainable mobility.
The Tamil Nadu facility not only strengthens VinFast’s global manufacturing footprint but also supports India’s green industrial transition, through localization of supply chains, technology transfer, and workforce upskilling.
