Volvo Cars has introduced its latest all-electric model, the Volvo ES90, a luxury sedan that not only reflects the brand’s premium design and performance ethos but also sets a new benchmark in sustainability. Set to begin production later this summer, the ES90 is designed to deliver one of the lowest carbon footprints in Volvo’s history, backed by a third-party verified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) report.
The ES90’s total carbon footprint is measured at 31 tonnes using a standard European energy mix, which drops further to 26 tonnes when charged using wind energy—making it approximately 50% lower than the S90 mild hybrid and 30% lower than the plug-in hybrid version. The ES90 outperforms even Volvo’s EX40 and EC40 models in climate impact.
“This car embodies our holistic approach to sustainability,” said Vanessa Butani, Head of Global Sustainability at Volvo Cars. “The ES90 reflects our push beyond regulatory requirements, contributing toward our goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.”
Key highlights of the ES90 include:
- A new 800-volt electric system for faster charging and improved energy efficiency
- Drag coefficient of 0.25, the most aerodynamic in Volvo’s history
- Use of 29% recycled aluminium, 18% recycled steel, and 16% recycled polymers
- Eco-friendly cabin with FSC-certified wood and Nordico upholstery made from recycled PET bottles
- Introduction of a battery passport, powered by blockchain technology, to trace raw material origin and monitor battery health
The ES90 is currently available for order in 17 European markets, including Germany, France, Sweden, the UK, and Italy, with more regions expected to be added through 2026. It is the fifth electric model from Volvo to receive an LCA report, showcasing the brand’s leadership in sustainability transparency.
This launch comes on the heels of a record year for Volvo Cars. In 2024, the company posted an all-time high SEK 400.2 billion in revenue and sold 763,389 vehicles globally, with a core operating profit of SEK 27 billion.
As Volvo accelerates its transition to a fully electric lineup, the ES90 stands as a milestone product—one that merges innovation, luxury, and environmental responsibility in a single, powerful package.
