Mark Voss, Assistant Chief Engineer of Battery Electric Truck Power Electronics at General Motors (GM), is playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of EV propulsion, leading innovation behind the scenes of GM’s growing electric truck portfolio.
With a career spanning over two decades—from working on the iconic Chevrolet Corvette to now spearheading electrification projects at GM’s Global Technical Center in Warren—Voss’s journey reflects both personal passion and professional evolution.
“There are all kinds of modules, accessories, drive units, and other systems in the car that ‘talk’ to the RESS (Rechargeable Energy Storage System),” says Voss. “Making sure RESS correctly and efficiently powers those components is my piece of the electrification puzzle.”
Currently, Voss leads the development and integration of power electronics for vehicles like the GMC HUMMER EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and BrightDrop electric commercial vans. His work focuses on ensuring energy from GM’s advanced battery systems is delivered seamlessly to drive units, electronic accessories, and consumer-focused features—like power seats and phone chargers—as well as GM Energy’s emerging vehicle-to-home technologies.
Voss’s career at GM began in 1998 as a contractor supporting quality engineering at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant (now Factory ZERO). By 2000, he joined GM full-time, eventually leading design for the C5 to C7 Corvette product lines. In 2018, he helped launch a new battery structure team, contributing to the development of cutting-edge models like the Cadillac CELESTIQ and LYRIQ.
His deep experience in vehicle architecture and passion for innovation make him a key figure in GM’s transition to electric mobility.
“RESS is the shiny toy we all talk about, but you still have to make that work with all the other parts of the vehicle,” Voss explains. “Taking the energy from RESS and making it functional is vital to the consumer experience.”
Outside the lab, Voss is a lifelong car enthusiast and self-proclaimed tinkerer. A childhood dream to work at GM came full circle when, years into his career, his mother reminded him of a grade school diary entry where he declared he’d grow up to be a GM engineer—with a Corvette and Blazer in his driveway. That dream is now his reality.
“My career has always involved creating new tech, better parts, and innovative systems that have never been done. That’s what keeps me going,” Voss says. Through his leadership and technical expertise, Mark Voss is helping drive GM’s all-electric future.
