In a significant boost to India’s electric mobility landscape, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a ₹700 crore investment to establish an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing hub in Kanpur. The initiative, part of the Kanpur Metropolitan Development Vision 2030, aims to transform the city into a pivotal node in the country’s EV ecosystem.
The project will be developed by the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) across a sprawling 500-acre site near Bhimsen, strategically positioned along the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). It will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to attract private sector expertise and capital.
According to the government’s official statement, the initiative seeks to strengthen Kanpur’s role in EV manufacturing by enhancing the local supply chain and encouraging indigenous production. The proposed industrial park will accommodate units for producing EV components such as electric motors, chassis, steel parts, lithium-ion cells, batteries, chargers, and controllers.
A key feature of the project is the inclusion of a dedicated Research and Development (R&D) centre. This facility will focus on innovation, with the goal of fostering cutting-edge EV technologies and supporting both regional and global advancement in the sector.
The government anticipates that the development will generate substantial employment opportunities, spur entrepreneurship, and contribute meaningfully to the state’s economic growth.
