In a strategic move to build a future-ready workforce in the green energy and electric vehicle (EV) sectors, the Directorate General of Training (DGT) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), in collaboration with Shell India, has launched an ambitious training initiative focused on Green Skills and Electric Mobility. The program, implemented by Edunet Foundation, aims to equip students and trainers across Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) with cutting-edge skills aligned to India’s net-zero vision.
In the first phase, the program introduces a three-tier model:
- A 240-hour advanced EV Technician course at 4 NSTIs,
- A 90-hour job-oriented EV skills course at 12 Shell-supported ITIs,
- And a 50-hour foundational green skills module at additional ITIs without physical labs.
The curriculum, co-developed by Shell India, Edunet Foundation, and DGT, covers EV systems, diagnostics, battery technologies, digital tools, and safety protocols, along with training for over 250 instructors and co-branded certifications. The program also includes structured placement support, ensuring a pathway from classroom to career.
A major highlight is the establishment of specialised EV skill labs in select training institutes, offering hands-on industry-aligned experience. These state-of-the-art labs are expected to significantly boost the employability of students in green energy and EV domains.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), MSDE, stated,
Green energy and electric mobility are not just environmental imperatives—they are a generational opportunity for India to lead. We are not just creating job-ready youth, but climate-ready citizens.
Smt. Trishaljit Sethi, Director General, DGT, MSDE, added, This partnership introduces cutting-edge EV technologies into vocational training, ensuring our students are aligned with real-world industry demands.
Mansi Madan Tripathy, Chairperson, Shell Group of Companies in India, echoed this sentiment, Equipping youth with green skills is key to supporting a low-carbon future. Our collaboration with DGT and Edunet Foundation is a step toward enabling young Indians to thrive in the green energy space.
This initiative complements national efforts like the FAME scheme, as well as state EV policies from Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, all aiming to promote electric mobility and generate green jobs.
With sustainability at its core, the DGT–Shell India partnership marks a pivotal step in skilling India’s youth for the global green economy, fostering innovation, employment, and national progress.
